Fall starts with 'Back to School Fiesta' flair
Soils and seeds were the focus of a special 'Plant the Seed' event led by representatives of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources' Agricultural Recruiting and Career Center earlier this fall at Texas Tech University's Student Union Building.
Led by Agri-Techsan members Abby McCulloch (above, far left) and Rhea Lynn Leonard, the activity was part of the university's Back to School Fiesta Day. The annual program was cosponsored by the Office of the President and Raiders Rojos National Alumni, a chapter of the Texas Tech Alumni Association.
Soil and Seeds. The event promoted education to area children and parents. Activities included a college and community fair, informational sessions, food and entertainment, campus bus tours, and school supplies for pre-kindergarten through high school students.
During the program, CASNR students distributed soil and seeds to children attending the day-long event along with instructions for growing the seeds.
Stay in School. "The activity demonstrated to the child that growing a seed was much like growing their mind, and that, just like a seed, they needed to take care of it by staying in school and continuing their education," said Rachel Bobbitt CASNR's Coordinator of Student Programs.
Speakers also presented information of Texas Tech's Red Raider Guarantee, a scholarship program that helps families with incomes of $40,000 or less. Students that qualify for the scholarship are eligible for free tuition and fees for up to eight semesters.
