Cheesy does it: Food Science Club sets Nov. 5 start for cheese sale
Texas Tech University's Food Science Club is spicing up its annual cheese sale. The sale begins Nov. 5 and will continue through the holidays in COWamongus! Creamery & Meat Company, the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources' small café and shop in the animal sciences building.
According to officials, one tasty highlight of this year's program is Max Miller's jalapeño cheese recipe. Miller is an associate professor specializing in dairy products in the Department of Animal and Food Sciences. The one-pound jalapeño cheese blocks will cost $7.
Officials said that proceeds from this year's fundraiser will be used to fund trips for the food science members to attend the Texas Association of Food Processors annual meeting April 16-18, 2008, in Westlake, and the Institute of Food Technologists Annual Meeting & Food Expo on June 28-July 2, 2008, in New Orleans.
Leaders. Tech's Food Science Club is led by Sarah Dierschke, president; Coby Jones, vice-president; Michael Tatum, secretary/treasurer; and Jonathan Hartzendorf, Student Organization Advisory Congress Representative.
In other action, members of the Food Science Club will be traveling later in October to Wall to learn how to make German sausage. The three-day program will run from Oct. 19-21. It is available to all club members.
Separately, the group is organizing a quiz bowl and product development team this year. The quiz bowl team would compete March 28 at the Longhorn Section of the Institute of Food Technologists Suppliers' Night in Frisco.
Nationals. The area winner will advance to nationals and compete at the Institute of Food Technologists Annual Meeting & Food Expo. The product development team is currently working on a product for the competition and both teams are open to anyone who is interested.
For more information on joining, contact Sarah Dierschke at sarah.dierschke@ttu.edu.
While promoting food science and offering professional opportunities to its members, Texas Tech's Food Science Club participates in several community service projects, including "Relay for Life" and the "Tech Can Share Canned Food Drive."
During Christmas, the group adopts an angel from the Salvation Army Angel Program. This year the organization will be participating in a "Memory Walk" that benefits the Alzheimer's Association.
