Wine expert joins Tech plant and soil science department
Brent Trela has joined Texas Tech University's Department of Plant and Soil Science as assistant professor of enology, the study of wine and winemaking. He will hold a joint appointment with Texas A&M University as an Extension specialist, as well.
"It would be nice to see Texas wines rank among the world's best," Trela said.
Industry Expertise. Trela's research will focus on phenolics and antioxidants, phytic acid as a wine stabilizer, wine stability issues and quality improvements for Texas wine. His wine industry expertise has been honed by working across the globe, including the nations of China, Thailand, Australia, Armenia and New Zealand.
Trela's teaching position is a new one at Texas Tech. While the curriculum is still being developed, officials expect that undergraduate classes will include an introduction to wines and winemaking, wine processing and fermentation, and wine quality control and analysis including sensory components.
Technology in Thailand. He is a member of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture and has been a member of the Australian Society for Viticulture and Oenology and the Northwest Center for Small Fruits Research.
Trela earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, and a master's degree in food science from the University of California-Davis. He received his doctorate in biotechnology from Suranaree University of Technology in Thailand.
