Tech meats judging team collects awards
Texas Tech University's Meats Judging Team won third place honors Oct. 29 at the High Plains Intercollegiate Contest in Plainview. Twenty-one teams from 13 universities competed in the event.
The contest requires competitors to evaluate meat from the beef, swine and sheep species. Students must have knowledge on how to judge and grade meat cuts and write concise and accurate reasons, said Markus Miller, team coach and San Antonio Livestock Show Distinguished Chair in Meat Science at Texas Tech
Top Honors.Texas Tech claimed second place in both beef grading and lamb judging. Combined with a third in specifications, the team received an overall score of 4,072 points, only 68 points from receiving top team honors.
Brett Gaylord of Jayton took sixth place with 1,042 points, while Austin Voyles of Cotton Center placed fifth in the reasons category ranking in the top 15 overall with 1,028 points. Alternates to the team, Benjamin Pyke of Humble and Crystal Waters of Fort Bragg, CA, placed third and fourth, respectively, with 1,047 points.
Next Contest. Team members include Cassie Chancey of Satanta, KS; Brett Gaylord; Cole Snider of Palestine; and Austin Voyles. Alternates are Benjamin Pyke, Crystal Waters and Kelli Chapman of Waxahachie.
The team's next contest is Nov. 11 at the International Intercollegiate Meats Judging contest in Dakota City, NE.
Texas Tech University's Meat Science Academic Quiz Bowl Team was named 2007 national champion at the 60th annual Reciprocal Meats Conference. Texas Tech was also named 2005 national champion at the International Congress of Meat Science and Technology conference in Baltimore.
