Tech Soils Judging Team scores high at regional contest
Texas Tech University's Soils Judging Team took first place in the team competition Oct. 25-26 at the Region VII Collegiate Contest in Dalhart. Hosted by West Texas A&M University, six teams from four states competed in the annual event.
Seth Sowder of Sudan placed first overall in the competition, while Evan Maxwell of Sudan and Cassidy Sooter of Seminole ranked among the contest's 'Top Ten.' Other members to the team participating in the contest were Justin Cave of Ackerly, Christopher Griffin of McKinney and Emily Thiemann of Red Oak.
Teamwork. The team is coached by Wayne Hudnall, B.L. Allen Endowed Professor of Pedology Plant and Soil Science Professor of Pedeology, and Charlie Clark, a master's graduate student in the Department of Plant and Soil Science.
Officials explained that the contest requires competitors to classify soils, designate soil horizons and determine clay content, as well as determine texture, color and structure. Contestants must also identify the correct order and suborder, and determine if a type of soil is suited for basement, road material and septic tank sewer system.
The next major competition for the Soils Judging Team will be the national contest on April 13-18 in Providence, RI. It will be hosted by the University of Rhode Island.
