Johnson receives 'Excellence in Academic Advising Award'
Phillip Johnson, a professor in Texas Tech University's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and director of the university's Thornton Agricultural Finance Institute, was presented June 6 with the 2008 President's Excellence in Academic Advising Award.
"This is indeed a superb accomplishment for Phil and for our department," said Eduardo Segarra, chairman of the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics
Extra Mile. According to officials, the honor is presented to an academic advisor who went the extra mile to assure quality service to student registration processes and degree planning. Those areas have become the focus of a campus-wide program to recognize academic advisors' commitment to Texas Tech students.
Both faculty and staff advisors were eligible for the award, which is intended to encourage, recognize and reward excellence in academic advising.
Current Research. In addition to academic advising, Johnson's current research projects include economic evaluation of water conservation policies and integrated production systems, and the financial viability of cotton gins under risk. His teaching activities include agribusiness finance, agricultural financial analysis and property appraisal.
He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in agricultural economics from Texas Tech. His doctorate in agricultural economics is from Texas Tech. Johnson serves on the board of directors of the Texas Agricultural Cooperative Council and is vice-chairman of the Education and Member Services Committee. In addition, he's coordinator of the annual Bankers Agricultural Credit Conference.
