In Profile: 2008 Ag Council President Dee Jay Wilde
As Dee Jay Wilde entered the Texas Tech University's Goddard Building as a freshman three years ago, the lanky West Texan literally saw one of his future goals written on the wall. In the building's atrium was a glass-encased message board listing the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources' Ag Council officers.
Looking back on that day, Wilde told himself that someday his name would be added to that list of leaders. Today, he's on the board. The junior agricultural economics and accounting major from Wall is the president of the Student Ag Council, in addition to serving as the college's Student Government Association senator.
Active in Agriculture. "I've always wanted to go to Tech," Wilde said. "This is a great opportunity for me. My ultimate goal for the Ag Council is to get more people involved. I want to pack the room every time we meet. I also want to bring in more speakers and bump up fund raising, primarily with our Pork Raffle and maybe a golf tournament."
From his youngest days, Wilde's life has centered on agriculture. Active in FFA in high school, he participated in judging events, particularly cotton judging. It's an area of agriculture that hits close to home. For years his family owned and operated a custom cotton harvesting business that ranged from south Texas to Kansas.
Stock Market. In addition to helping his father, Donald, harvest cotton during his summer breaks, Wilde developed an interest in the stock market thanks to his mother, Ruth, who is a licensed stock broker.
"All the money that I made in the summer was invested," Wilde said. "I got started in my first mutual fund when I was ten," he said with a smile.
Wilde isn't the first in his family with ties to Tech. His sister, Joslynn, graduated from Texas Tech last year with a degree in public relations.
After graduation Wilde plans to stay in West Texas and open his own agriculture-based certified public accounting firm. Meanwhile, he said there's a possibility entering state and even national politics at a future date.
