Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo honored at CASNR luncheon
More than 120 Texas Tech University's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources students, faculty and guests welcomed 14 representatives from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, including the organization's chairman Charles "Butch" Robinson, at a special Oct. 22 luncheon at the university's International Cultural Center.
During the program Robinson spotlighted the positive intent behind the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo's ongoing scholarship program, as well as the group's commitment to investing in the future of those Texans who have both proven themselves in their studies and aspire to be future leaders in their respective fields.
Laboratory Tour. Following the luncheon, the representatives took a tour of Tech's state-of-the-art Experimental Science Building, which houses the research labs of the Department of Animal and Food Sciences' Mindy Brashears and the Department of Plant and Soil Science's Thea Wilkins. Wilkins is the college's Bayer Crop Science Regents Professor in Genomics, and Brashears is an associate professor and director of the International Center for Food Industry Excellence.
According to officials, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has supported Texas students and universities since 1957. Since beginning with just one scholarship, the program has expanded to almost $100 million in scholarships, grants, and fellowships throughout the state.
Longtime Support. In the fall of 2008, 2,176 students were enrolled at 89 Texas colleges and universities on direct Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarships. Of these scholarships, 125 students enrolled at Texas Tech, including 63 students in the College of Agriculture Sciences and Natural Resources. Additionally, Tech has 54 students on Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo endowed scholarships and six graduate assistantships.
"I'm honored and humbled to win the assistantship, and I aim to make the most of their investment in my future so that one day I may give back three-fold what has been a blessing to me," said Evan Chaney, a Department of Animal and Food Sciences' graduate research assistant Sciences and the recipient of one of the highly competitive graduate assistantships.
Hundreds Helped. Since the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo scholarship program's inception in 1957, 951 rodeo scholars have attended Texas Tech with direct rodeo scholarships valued at more than $5.3 million. Additionally, hundreds of other Tech students have received scholarships from the scholarship endowment whose principal is over $1.5 million. The organization has also provided $577,000 in research funding to Tech, and over $924,000 in support of graduate assistantships and doctoral fellowships.
