Tech officially designates International Cotton Research Center
Formally recognizing Texas Tech University's national pre-eminence in cotton research, officials here recently announced that the International Cotton Research Center in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources has been designated an official Texas Tech University Center. The multi-institutional and inter-disciplinary center at Texas Tech recognizes and capitalizes upon the efforts of the greatest concentration of world-class cotton research scientists in the nation
Cotton is king on the High Plains of Texas. The cotton industry accounts for nearly $5 billion of the state's economy, and well over 20 percent of the nation's cotton production is grown within 100 miles of Lubbock, home of the Red Raiders and the research center.
By thoroughly integrating the many disciplines currently involved in cotton research at Texas Tech, Texas AgriLife Research, Texas AgriLife Extension and USDA-ARS, the center serves as a hub of research and coordinated outreach by developing state-of-the-art technology, innovation, economic development, and excellence in graduate and undergraduate education, said Sukant Misra, co-director of the International Cotton Research Center and associate dean of research in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
Funded through targeted federal, industry, and university initiatives, the International Cotton Research Center funds and oversees a number of innovative and groundbreaking research initiatives with industry-wide implications each year.
Some recent projects include:" Craig Bednarz: Irrigation Termination for Improved Fiber Maturity on the Texas High Plains" Eric Hequet, Noureddine Abidi: Textile Evaluation of Texas High Quality Upland Cottons" Hong Zhang, Dick Auld, John Zak, Thomas Thompson: Creating drought tolerant cotton for West Texas" Kevin Bronson, Jeff Johnson: Improving Nitrogen Management in Subsurface Drip-Irrigated Cotton" Chenggang Wang, Kevin Bronson, Eduardo Segarra: Economic Efficiency Analysis of Cotton Production in the Texas High Plains" Darren Hudson: Policy analysis for Cotton and Other Fibers
Already home to the Fiber and Biopolymer Research and Cotton Economics Research Institutes, Texas Tech is internationally known for its activities related to all aspects of cotton research, as well as its analysis and improvement of cotton fibers and after market cotton products.
