New recruiting coordinator joins Plant and Soil Science staff
Fresh off earning a master's degree in agricultural communications from Texas Tech University in December, Katie Leigh Meeks has joined the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources' Department of Plant and Soil Science as its new communications and recruiting coordinator.
"Agriculture has and always will be my passion," Meeks said. "I grew up in a ranching family and have wanted to share my knowledge and values of American agriculture with other people for as long as I can remember."
Good Fit. A native of San Antonio, Meeks was active in FFA at the chapter, district and area levels. She received a bachelor's degree in animal science from Texas A&M in 2007, and shortly thereafter moved to the South Plains to pursue a graduate program.
"The second I stepped off the plane on my way to visit Texas Tech a year and a half ago, I knew not only that this was where I wanted to be "" but that I was definitely going to fit in and do well here," she said.
Water Conservation. While working on degree here in the Hub City, Leigh assisted with the Texas Alliance for Water Conservation project, helping develop and implement water conservation practices for West Texas farmers.
The project uses on-farm demonstrations of cropping and livestock systems to compare the production practices, technologies, and systems that can maintain individual farm profitability, while improving water use efficiency. One of the goals of the program is to extend the life of the Ogallala Aquifer, while maintaining the viability of local farms and communities.
Exciting Opportunity. Leigh pointed out that she's proud to continue her agricultural associations in her new position, and looks forward to recruiting exceptional students into CASNR's plant and soil science programs.
"My goal is to show students that they can pursue a wide range of exciting opportunities within the plant and soil science field," Meeks said. "Whether they see enticing internships, excellent potential job opportunities, or professors or classes that meet their interests, I aim to be the link that can get them to Texas Tech to begin their journey."
