In Profile: Agricultural & Applied Economics' Olga Murova
After more than two decades of working, studying and conducting research in the United States, Ukraine native Olga Murova is no stranger to American-style academia. Still, she remembers distinct differences between the South Plains and her former Eastern European homeland.
Specifically, agricultural education is markedly different here at Texas Tech than in the Ukraine of her youth. "Students here at Tech should realize what a wonderful opportunity they have "" not only to study what they want, where they want "" but also to relish having the opportunity to do so without outside influences," Murova said.
Transition Economies. Today, Murova is particularly interested in the complexities associated with international and rural development, international trade and production agriculture, especially with respect to how each of these areas relate to transition economies, like those of the Ukraine and the former Soviet Socialist Republics.
Hoping to expand her research into agribusiness management, Murova feels that she has found in Lubbock an exceptional place to continue her career. "I'm very excited to work at Texas Tech because of its knowledgeable and friendly colleagues and the particularly supportive environment in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics," she said.
Research Specialist. Murova joined Texas Tech in 2005 as an instructor in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics and was named an assistant professor in the department three years later. Previously she worked for four years as a research specialist in the University of Arkansas' Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness. She also worked six years as an economist with the Management of Municipal Economy in Donetsk, Ukraine.
Murova received a master's degree in agribusiness management and doctorate in agricultural and applied economics at Mississippi State University. In addition she earned bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering from the Makeevsky Civil Engineering Institute, which was later named the Donbas National Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture.
