AFS major Hartzog set to end reign as Masked Rider
Texas Tech University baseball fans will be part of history Friday as senior animal science major Ashley Hartzog, the 2008-2009 Masked Rider, is set to make a historic ride on Dan Law Field prior to first pitch of a series opener against Texas A&M.
It's the first time the iconic mascot has ever led the baseball team onto the field, and the event will be one of the Farwell native's final appearances on Midnight Matador as her reign as the Masked Rider comes to an end later this spring.
School Spirit. Hartzog is the 48th student to serve as the Masked Rider, a nationally-recognized symbol of Texas Tech school spirit. Mounted on a black quarter horse and wearing a black mask, bolero hat and a red-and-black cape, the Masked Rider has led the football team onto the field for more than five decades.
Hartzog has ridden, trained and shown horses everywhere from ranches to rodeos for more than 16 years, and in 2003 was president of the Llano Estacado Horse Association. She has competed on Texas Tech's Ranch Horse, Horse Judging and Equestrian teams and completed an internship with seedstock giant Leachman Cattle of Colorado.
Officials said students and visitors can get autographs and photographs with the Masked Rider once the game begins behind the stands along the first base line. Tickets for each of the three games of the Texas A&M series are $11 for adults and $9 for youth, and can be purchased in advance by calling the Texas Tech Athletics Ticket Office.
