Ag Olympics, honors banquet highlight CASNR Awareness Week
Texas Tech University's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources kicks off its annual Agriculture and Natural Resources Awareness Week April 18 with a number of activities planned, running throughout the following week. Featured events include the second annual Red Raider Extravaganza, a barbecue cook-off competition, the Ag Olympics, and the CASNR Honor's Banquet.
Ag Council president, Dee Jay Wilde, notes just how important Ag Awareness Week is both to the students of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and the university as a whole, "because it teaches students from all walks of life and all sorts of majors how important agriculture really is." Even more important, he said, "is educating students how crops are grown and produced, how animals are raised and slaughtered, and how crop-raised renewable fuels can impact the entire nation's consumption of fuel and other sources of energy."
Raider Extravaganza. The College begins the week by hosting its 'Red Raider Extravaganza' on April 18 at the Texas Tech Livestock Arena where it will feed over 1,250 high school FFA students competing in state judging contests. The Student Services Center uses this opportunity to recruit high school students interested in Texas Tech University and the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
The week's competition heats up April 19 in the Animal Science Parking Lot where the Council will host its annual BBQ Cook-Off immediately before the Ag Olympics. Fifteen teams are expected to compete for bragging rights as to who has the best and most unique beef, chicken, and pork barbeque dishes.
Then, just steps away in the Livestock Arena, teams from across the college will participate in the Ag Olympics "" which features head-to-head competition in six events, including a sled race, a tug of war, an obstacle course, a cow tongue pass race, musical chairs, and the ever-popular pie-eating contest.
Separately, during CASNR's Ag Awareness Week, the Agri-Techsans will be selling CASNR
T-shirts at a number of locations around the college between April 20-24. Day, location
and times include:
"Monday/Animal and Food Sciences: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
"Tuesday/Agricultural Sciences: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
"Wednesday/Agricultural Education: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
"Thursday/Plant and Soil Science: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
"Friday/Goddard Building: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Honors Banquet. In addition to a slideshow detailing the Ag Council's activities over the last year, the honors banquet on April 24 at the Merket Alumni Pavilion will recognize student and faculty members involved in the college's many clubs or judging teams and those who have given so much of their time and effort over the past year.
Among those to be honored include:
"Outstanding clubs of the semester
"Aggies of the Month
"Members of the college's competitive judging teams
"Ag Olympics champions
"Outstanding students in each of the college's respective disciplines
"Outstanding members of the staff and faculty
"Ag Council representatives
Ultimately, Wilde said that though the week is filled with fun events, fellowship, and friendly competition, "most of all, Ag Awareness Week is simply a way to get students to realize where they would be without agriculture and how much hard work and education goes into producing these goods that students may otherwise take for granted."
