Floral design show, channeling mythological splendor
Winter-weary residents of Texas Tech University got a sweet smelling reprieve in early April as floral design students in the Department of Plant and Soil Science staged an exhibition of their best work in the atrium of the new animal and food sciences building. The morning event served both as a fundraiser and as the student's final project.
"I always enjoy teaching the spring floral design class because it affords me the opportunity to interact with students on a creative level," said Judith Wilmington, an instructor in the department and its greenhouse manager. "They consistently amaze me in the expression of their designs and show planning."
Competition Winners. This year's exhibition featured designs inspired by mythological figures ranging
from Zeus, Poseidon, and Dionysus to Aphrodite and Apollo. The competition's winners
were:
"Luiz Terrazas, a senior landscape architecture major from El Paso "" Zeus
"Christina Conway, a senior multi-disciplinary sciences major from Dallas "" Hades
"Emily Schulze, a restaurant, hotel, and institutional management major from Tyler
"" Poseidon
"Robert Cope, a senior landscape architecture major from Lubbock "" Dionysus
"Brenda Romero, a non-traditional student from Clovis, N.M. "" Aphrodite
"Kelly Herzog, a junior landscape architecture major from Buda - Apollo
At the completion of the competition, the students' floral arrangements were sold for a donation of $25 to the Texas Tech Foundation's Margaret Coil Endowment for Floral Design. The endowment was founded by Margaret Coil, an Oklahoma native who moved to Lubbock in 1949 and pursued her love of gardening and floral design throughout her life. According to officials, this year's donation of $600 will help offset the expensive material costs associated with floral design instruction at Texas Tech.
