Tech faculty honors convocation highlights CASNR leaders
Four faculty members from Texas Tech University's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources received awards April 21 for their quality teaching and research during the university's annual Faculty Honors Convocation in Lubbock.
"We have wonderful faculty at Texas Tech," said Bob Smith, provost. "The annual convocation is a way to recognize the very best in teaching, research and service in our academic community."
Leslie Thompson, associate department chair and graduate coordinator with the Department of Animal and Food Sciences, received a President's Academic Achievement Award, which recognizes faculty members who have demonstrated distinction in teaching, research and service.
Outstanding Effort. Sam Prien, a professor and member of the graduate faculty of the Department of Animal and Food Sciences, won one of the President's Excellence in Teaching Awards. Prien also serves as a professor in Texas Tech University Health Sciences' Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
One of the university's nine Outstanding Research Awards went to Warren Ballard, a widely published author and nationally recognized professor from Tech's Department of Natural Resources Management. Ballard, a professor and holder of the Bricker Chair in Wildlife Management, previously was honored as a Paul Whitfield Horn Professor, the highest honor bestowed upon a faculty member.
Emeritus Status. Meanwhile, one of the Texas Tech Alumni Association New Faculty Awards went to Scott Burris, an assistant professor in the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications. Separately, certificates also were presented to newly retired faculty members who have earned emeritus status.
Professors earn the emeritus designation, an honorary title, through length of service,
faithful service or through distinctive service. Emeritus faculty from CASNR included:"¨
" Bob Albin, a professor of beef cattle nutrition and management in the Department
of Animal and Food Sciences who served previously as CASNR's associate dean for research"¨
" Marvin Cepica, most recently dean of Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and
Natural Resources and professor in the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications"¨
" Don Ethridge, a ground-breaking agricultural economist and one of the founding leaders
of Texas Tech University's Cotton Economics Research Institute"¨
" Ellen Peffley, a professor in the Department of Plant and Soil Science and winner
of the Chancellor's Council Award for Distinguished Teaching
Horn Professors. Faculty Honors Convocation officials recognized the university's Paul Whitfield Horn Professors, including Ballard, Vivien Allen and Michael Galyean, and the Department of Animal and Food Sciences' Thornton Chair in Beef Cattle Nutrition and Management.
The Horn Professorship was established in 1966 to recognize scholarly achievement and outstanding service to Texas Tech. The honor is named for Texas Tech's first president Paul Whitfield Horn. Since its inception, more than 75 members of the faculty have been appointed Horn Professors and 34 remain on faculty.
