Thrill of the Grill; Ag Olympics fired up about BBQ winners
Barbecuing is normally spent talking to pals and downing cold drinks to beat the heat. But at Texas Tech University 'Ag Olympics' last weekend, cooking teams from across the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources had no time to chat as they tried to barbecue their way to first place in the annual competition on the Lubbock campus.
While seven teams vied for top bragging rights in best beef, chicken, pork, or miscellaneous barbeque dishes, it was the grill seekers from Tech's Meat Science Association that dominated with victories in the beef, chicken and pork contests.
Beef Honors. Still, there were other winners. The Meat Association had to share its beef honors with the Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow, who also tied for first in the division. And, Alpha Gamma Rho won the miscellaneous division with a delectable offering of bacon-wrapped jalapeno peppers.
Based upon its domination of three of the competition's five divisions, the Meat Science Association earned best overall honors and a $50 gift certificate to Cagle's Steaks. Additionally, each division winner took home a $25 gift certificate from one of several Lubbock barbeque restaurants.
'Get Dirty' Meanwhile, Texas Tech's Block and Bridle (Navy) Team took top honors in the more traditional aspects of the Ag Olympics competition, which featured a dozen teams. Rounding out the 'Top 5' finishers were the Pre-Vet Society (Gray) Team, Collegiate FFA (Royal) Team, Alpha Gamma Rho (Blue) Team, and the Meat Science Association (Gold) Team.
"Our theme for the Ag Olympics this year was 'Get Dirty' and that is exactly what we did," said Ag Council President Dee Jay Wilde. "We had everything from cow tongue pass to tug-of-war."
