CASNR students honored during spring commencement
Texas Tech University awarded diplomas to more than 3,100 students during the May graduation exercises at the United Spirit Arena in Lubbock, including 129 from the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources during the May 8 program.
Commencement speaker for the May 8 program was Ambassador Karen Hughes, former counselor to President George W. Bush and under secretary of state with the rank of ambassador. During the event outstanding students carried banners representing their respective colleges. Jenna Jones, an agricultural communications major from Slaton, represented CASNR. Administrators selected the banner bearers based on all-around achievement.

Karen Hughes served as counselor to President George W. Bush from 2001-2002 and as under secretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs from 2005-2007. Prior to that she served as director of communications in the Texas Governor's Office and directed communications during then-Gov. Bush's successful campaign for Texas governor in 1994 and his campaign for re-election in 1998. She currently serves as global vice chair of public relations and communications at Burson-Marsteller, a major global public relations and communications firm.
