In Profile: CASNR 2009 Student of the Year Jenna Jones
Jenna Jones was standing in front of a packed audience of friends and faculty last week at Texas Tech University's ritzy Merket Alumni Center, when the 22-year-old senior learned she was the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources' 2009 Outstanding Student of the Year.
"Being a part of CASNR has really been a wonderful experience," Jones said following the ceremony. "Tech's a big school, but CASNR gives you a place where faculty and staff have your best interests at heart and want to see you do well in everything you do."
Outstanding Student. It was another extraordinary honor in several seasons of accolades for the agricultural communications major from Slaton. With a 4.0 grade point average and membership in Tech's Mortar Board, which includes the university's 'Top 50' seniors, Jones has been a perpetual member of the President's List since 2005.
Her honors include being named a CASNR Dean's Scholar and membership in the Alpha Lambda Delta, Phi Eta Sigma and Omicron Delta Kappa honor societies. Earlier this semester she was named the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications' outstanding student, as well.
Homecoming Queen. Even as a child, Jones said she was destined to follow the academic path of her parents, J.D. and Julie Jones of Slaton, and attend Texas Tech. "I was born and raised a Red Raider," she said in a recent interview, "When it was time to apply for college, I had no doubt that Tech was where I wanted to be. Actually, I didn't even apply anywhere else."
Beyond academic excellence, Jones is known across campus for her activities outside the classroom. Last year she was Tech's Homecoming Queen and she has twice served as one of the university's student representatives to the state legislature and was a member of the Student Alumni Association Board of Directors.
Law School Bound. Actively involved in Tech's Student Government Association since her freshman year, she now serves as one of the CASNR's senators. Her political experience extends well beyond the South Plains, though. Last summer she entered the CASNR Government Internship Program in Washington, D.C., where she served in the office of Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA).
Looking past her graduation later this month, Jones said she won't have to travel far for her next academic challenge. She's been accepted to the Texas Tech Law School and starts her new classes in the fall.
"No matter what course I choose after law school, I know that my time at CASNR and Tech has prepared me to be successful," Jones said. "I've grown as a person because of the people I've met and the experiences I've had here. I know that I'll carry those lessons into whatever I do in the future."
