Alicia Daugherty reigns at Collegiate NRHA Championship
Texas Tech University senior Alicia Daugherty tied for second place at the 2009 National
Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Collegiate Reining Championship on Saturday (June
27) at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City. Daugherty, one of 12 riders
to compete, earned a score of 214.50 aboard 'The Ultimate Magnum,' owned by Jean Piper
of Madisonville.
Twelve riders from both varsity and non-varsity schools were selected for the Collegiate Reining Championship competition, which is held in conjunction with the NRHA Derby. Four riders were chosen based on performance at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships (VENC), four more were chosen based on performance at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) National Championships, while the final four were selected based on their non-collegiate performance in the sport of reining over the past two years.
Daugherty is the current Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Individual Reserve National Champion in Reining.
Lyndsey Jordan of Auburn captured the title after earning a score of 218. Oklahoma
State's Bri Parnell and Georgia's Kate Stewart tied for fourth with scores of 212
apiece. The results were:

Daugherty, an agricultural communications major from Alpine, is the first rider in school history to compete in this invitational event. Daugherty, who is coached by Robin Morris, will resume competition with the equestrian team in the fall.
