Historic CASNR pavilion joins emergency blue phone system
A campus emergency 'blue phone' has been installed adjacent to Texas Tech University's Landscape Architecture Pavilion, report officials with Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
"Providing for the well-being of our students and faculty "" both inside the classroom and outside "" is and always will be a top priority for the college," said John Burns, dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. "The campus blue phone system and the due diligence of the entire university community as a whole are important factors in making the college and the university as safe as humanly possible."
Tech's University Police Department continuously monitors 85 blue phones placed in strategic locations throughout the campus, both inside academic buildings and outside, along heavily travelled walkways and parking lots. The phone boxes provide a direct and immediate line to department officers.
"Help is just a button push away," said Tech Police Officer Joe Rodriguez. "Even if a student simply feels that something just isn't right, it doesn't hurt to push the button and seek assistance. Campus safety is our top priority."
Members of the Red Raider community can easily identify outside blue phones in parking lots by a blue light mounted on a pole above metal phone boxes. Blue phones in academic buildings are easily recognizable by a metal box with the word "EMERGENCY" printed in bold red letters.
"I've been pushing for installation of this emergency phone for going on three years now," said Alon Kvashny, chairman of the Department of Landscape Architecture. "We have students working in the pavilion well into the night throughout the academic year. Up until this point, there has not been an emergency phone between the Student Union Building and the Architecture building. Beyond that, students had to get all the way to United Spirit Arena before they encountered another phone."
University police department officials note that students may use the phones for obtaining information and reporting emergencies. Just as important, because the phones are primarily for emergency situations, they ask anyone who finds an inoperable phone to please report it to the Texas Tech Police Department immediately.
