Plant ecologist joins Tech's Plant & Soil Science Department
Jyotsna Sharma, a plant ecologist and conservationist from the University of Florida, has joined Texas Tech University's Department of Plant and Soil Science as a new assistant professor of environmental horticulture. She began her research and teaching duties in March.
"My research focuses on the biology, molecular ecology, and conservation of rare plants, especially terrestrial orchids," Sharma said.
At Texas Tech, she will teach an introductory horticulture class and will develop a graduate level mycorrhizal symbiosis course. In the past she has taught classes at other universities in advanced graduate research, plant molecular/cellular biology, and mycorrhizal symbiosis.
Prior to joining Texas Tech, Sharma was an assistant professor at the University of Florida North Florida Research and Education Center. She was a postdoctoral research associate at Iowa State University and a graduate research assistant at the University of Missouri "" Columbia.
She received her bachelor's degree in horticulture and business from the University of Arkansas "" Fayetteville. She's a member of IUCN Orchid Specialist Group, Ecological Society of America, Botanical Society of America, and the Native Orchid Conference.
