Tech's 'The Agriculturist' magazine wins national recognition
Texas Tech University's Department of Agricultural Education and Communications student magazine, The Agriculturist, has won the National Agricultural Alumni and Development Association's first place award in its student programs area department/unit newsletter category.
"We are, of course, very proud of our students' work," says Rachel Bobbitt, the college's coordinator of student services, "and thankful for the national recognition this award has brought the university, the college, and the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications."
Submitted by Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Student Services Center, The Agriculturist is published semi-annually and features the work of students enrolled in ACOM 4310: Development of Agricultural Publications in partial fulfillment of degree requirements. It is funded entirely by advertisers and local sponsors and is a not-for-profit publication.
Submissions for the NAADA's annual print media competition include newsletters, brochures, reports, and other agriculture informational material produced by students enrolled in agricultural and related programs in colleges and universities around the country.
Each submission is subsequently evaluated in a number of different categories, to include the publication's overall concept; the quality and scope of its writing; the craftsmanship of its design; the quality of its print, graphics, and photography; and its budget.
Beyond merely fulfilling course requirements, The Agriculturist is a valuable recruiting and retention tool for the college that features student work not only for prospective students but future employers, as well, as its stories focus upon CASNR students, faculty, research, and alumni activities.
"Our students produce an excellent, professional-quality publication," Bobbitt said, "and this award really only highlights what we have always known "" that Tech's agriculture students, programs, and opportunities are among the best in the nation."
