Newton named FFA Collegiate Agricultural Ambassador
The National Collegiate FFA Organization has selected a Texas Tech University sophomore to serve as one of 20 National Collegiate Agricultural Ambassadors for the next year. The focus of the program is to develop and implement a sustainable agricultural awareness plan among teachers and students on the local level and to share the importance of agriculture.
Michelle Newton, an agricultural communications major from Hale Center, will deliver presentations to high school classes, community organizations and other groups interested in learning about the agriculture industry. The presentations will focus on economic importance, environmental stewardship, sound science, and sustainable agriculture.
Newton participated in a four-day training last month, where she concentrated on enhancing her presentation skills and received training on current agriculture issues. The training took place at the National FFA Organization's headquarters in Indianapolis.
The National FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Farmers of America, is a national youth organization of 507,763 student members. There are more than 7,400 local FFA chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
The organization changed to its present name in 1988 in recognition of the growth and diversity of agriculture and agricultural education. According to officials, the FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
