Returning Red Raiders set to rein in rodeo accolades
Led by last year's southwest region reserve all-around champion, Texas Tech rodeo team leaders are predicting an upcoming season of solid performances built on hard-earned experience. The Red Raider riders took second place last year at the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association regional and placed in the 'Top 20' at Wyoming's College National Finals Rodeo this summer.
"We're coming off a strong season with a number of great performances by our men and women's teams," said Texas Tech coach Chris Guay. "We've improved in most events and look forward to an even better season this year."
Among Tech's rodeo team leaders are:" Logan Allen, an agricultural leadership major from Crescent, Iowa, who last year earned Southwest region Reserve All-Around Champion honors and a twelfth place finish in bull riding at the College National Finals." Stetson Rasberry, a business management major from Roby, who had an excellent regional run last year and was named the sixth-ranked collegiate bull rider in the nation." Erica Creswell, a psychology major from Weatherford, Okla., was last season's lone female qualifier for nationals. She finished twenty-seventh in breakaway roping, in addition to gaining experience against some of the nation's best collegiate riders." Alberta, Canada native Luke Creasy, an English and journalism transfer from Western Texas College, was the Southwest Region reserve bareback champion and sixth place finisher in Casper last year." Experienced bull riders Ryan Shanklin and Bonner Bolton, transfers from South Plains and Odessa Colleges respectively, round out the notable additions to this year's men's team." New Mexico junior college transfers Kallie Lamb, an animal and food sciences major from Alberta, Canada, and Maggie Moore, a hippo therapy major from North Carolina, join Dani McGuire, an agricultural and applied economics transfer from Odessa College, as experienced competitors on the women's team.
"We couldn't have asked for a better roster of returning competitors, but to have so many notable junior college transfers and such a strong incoming freshman class is even more remarkable," Guay said. "I can't even begin to tell you how excited we are to get back into competition."
Tech's rodeo team will compete in five rodeos during the fall semester with the goal of bringing regional championship honors back to Lubbock and qualifying for the College National Finals Rodeo. The fall competitions include:" Eastern New Mexico University, Portales, N.M. "" Sept. 17-19" Sul Ross State University, Alpine "" Sept. 24-26" Frank Phillips College, Perryton "" Oct. 1-3" Vernon College, Vernon "" Oct. 8-10" Texas Tech Rodeo "" Oct. 15-17.
"We're pulling out all the stops to ensure the annual Texas Tech Rodeo remains one of the region's premier events," said Guay, who noted that proceeds from the event comprise most of the team's General support budget for the year.
