In Profile: 2009 Ag Council President Ashley Larkin
Talked into a campus tour by her best friend, Ashley Larkin visited Texas Tech University as a high school senior with few expectations. "But from the moment I set foot on campus, I fell in love," the Houston native said. "The friendly atmosphere and the faculty immediately won me over."
Always a planner and a leader, Larkin, an interdisciplinary agriculture (ag education) junior who will become a senior in December, recently added the title of 2009 Ag Council President to a growing list of accomplishments since arriving in Lubbock two years ago.
Busy Schedule: In addition to chairing this year's Ag Council, she's president of both Texas Tech's Collegiate FFA chapter and the Texas Collegiate FFA Association. She's a CASNR senator in Tech's Student Government Association, an Ambassador for Agriculture, and the Secretary of the university's chapter of Sigma Alpha, a professional agricultural sorority active on campus since 1992.
"It's not uncommon to see students whose resumes are as full as mine," she said. "But I don't do what I do simply to fill my resume. I truly believe in the organizations I join."
Passion for Agriculture. Not one to rest on her laurels, Larkin hopes to build upon the successes of her predecessor, Dee Jay Wilde, and to expand the Ag Council's profile both within the college and campus wide. "We truly want to make sure that all of the college's clubs are represented on the council," she said. "We want to make sure that everyone has a voice and be a part of the activities we do for the college."
After graduation, Larkin plans to put her lifelong passion for agriculture into teaching. "My love for agriculture and education is leading me in the direction of becoming an ag teacher," she said. "I hope to earn a master's degree and teach, at least for awhile. Ultimately, I can see myself pursuing professional opportunities with either the Texas or National FFA Associations."
