Raising the Bar: CASNR rolls to near record enrollment
Texas Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources reached a benchmark in student enrollment with a near record number of students signed up for classes in the fall semester, university officials said this week. Final enrollment stood at 1,685, up 8.8 percent from last fall's 1,548.
"There seems to be a new energy on our campus this fall," said John Burns, dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
The numbers for individual departments were:
"Department of Agricultural & Applied Economics: 336 (Grad: 46 / Undergrad: 290)
"Department of Agricultural Education & Communications: 329 (Grad: 78 / Undergrad:
251)
"Animal & Food Sciences: 410 (Grad: 58 / Undergrad: 352)
"Department of Landscape Architecture: 162 (Grad: 12 / Undergrad: 150)
"Natural Resources Management: 233 (Grad: 34 / Undergrad: 199)
"Department of Plant & Soil Science: 200 (Grad: 90 / Undergrad: 110)
"Agricultural Undecided: 15 (Grad: 6 / Undergrad: 9)
Historically, CASNR had its largest enrollment in the Fall of 1977 when 1,687 students were enrolled in the college, according to Ramona Johnson, CASNR's Coordinator of Undergraduate Programs.
CASNR's undergraduate enrollment this fall was up 8.1 percent at 1,361, compared with 1,258 last year. The graduate enrollment this fall was up 11.7 percent at 324, compared with 290 last autumn. The graduate enrollment is a record breaker for the college.
"We're proud of the efforts of our entire faculty, staff and current students in achieving this milestone," said Norman Hopper, CASNR's Associate Dean and a Piper Professor.
"CASNR is extremely excited about our student numbers this fall," added Cindy Akers, CASNR's Director of Student Services. "Recruitment is a combined effort of our excellent students, alumni, faculty, and staff. The CASNR Student Services Center is fortunate to have a vast network throughout the state and nation to assist with promoting the college."
Meanwhile, the university itself shattered enrollment records with more than 30,000 students enrolled this fall. Final enrollment was 30,049, up 1,627 from last fall's 28,422. Tech's previous record enrollment was 28,549 set in the fall 2003 semester. The university also set a record for freshmen enrollment with 4,579, surpassing the previous record of 4,515 set in fall 2007.
"I'm gratified that increasing numbers of both graduate and undergraduate students make Texas Tech their choice for a quality education," said President Guy Bailey.
There were increases in both undergraduate and graduate enrollment. Graduate enrollment continued to set records with 5,175 students enrolled, up from 4,670 last fall semester. The Graduate School has grown every fall semester since the 2003. Undergraduate enrollment was 24,236, up from 23,107 in the fall 2008 semester.
