Rodeo Update: Texas Tech places well at West Texas A&M
The Texas Tech University women's rodeo team took second place this weekend at the West Texas A&M University Rodeo in Perryton. Hosted by Frank Phillips College and West Texas A&M, the National Collegiate Rodeo Association event featured 16 colleges from across the region.
Among the women's highlight performances were:
"Kallie Lamb, a junior animal and food sciences major from Alberta, Canada, won the goat tying
championship after tying for second in round one and tying for first in the 'Top 10'
finals Saturday night. Lamb's performances gave her the aggregate (average) or overall
win.
"Erica Creswell, a junior psychology major from Weatherford, Okla., placed first in the first go
round out of 65 contestants in the goat tying event. The president of the Tech Rodeo
Association placed fourth in the finals, which gave her a second place finish in the
average.
"Taylor Langdon, a freshman animal and food sciences major from Aubrey, placed fourth in barrel racing
in the first go round out of 100 contestants. She placed sixth in the finals, and
finished fifth overall.
Meanwhile, the Texas Tech men's rodeo team has a solid showing with a fourth place
finish. Standout performers included:
"Luke Creasy, a junior English major from Alberta, Canada, won his second championship of the
semester in the bareback bronc riding event. He qualified for the finals by placing
fourth in go round one, placed first in the finals, and finished first overall.
"Logan Allen, an agriculture leadership major from Crescent, Iowa, placed third in the saddle
bronc riding finals and third overall in the classic event (saddle bronc riding).
"Sterling Smith, a senior exercise and sports sciences major from Post, placed fifth in go round
one out 95 calf ropers, winning second place in the finals. He placed second overall
in the calf roping event.
"Craig Leonard, a junior animal and food sciences major from Sonora, placed in calf roping. He placed
third in the finals, and finished fourth overall.
"Adam Sawyer, a junior agriculture business major from Bassett, Nebraska, placed first in the
steer wrestling finals. He finished second overall in steer wrestling.
"Ryan Shanklin, junior agriculture leadership major from Rocksprings, tied for first in the finals
and won second overall in bull riding. Shanklin is coming off a second place finish
at the Pendleton Roundup Rodeo. Both Shanklin and Leonard grandfathers were members
of the 1955 Texas Tech National Champion Rodeo Team.
"Miami's Jake Booze placed sixth in the calf roping after the first go round, sixth in finals, and sixth
overall.
Both the men's and women's teams compete next at Vernon College in Wichita Falls, the site of the next National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association rodeo.
