Johnson, Meinzer named TTU Association Distinguished Alumni
Two of the three honorees for this year's Texas Tech Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Awards are from Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. The award program highlights the university's prominent graduates who have gone on to achieve personal success while bringing recognition to the university.
This year's recipients were civil engineering grad, Douglas Barnhart, along with CASNR alums: award-winning land developer Larry Johnson and noted wildlife photographer and writer Wyman Meinzer.
Each year's distinguished alumni are selected from a list of nominations submitted by members and friends of the organization, said Bill Dean, executive vice president and CEO of the alumni association. A panel of representatives from the university and the association vote on the three finalists based on their accomplishments in their respective fields.
Larry Johnson. Houston businessman Johnson received his bachelor's degree in agricultural economics in 1961 before attending law school at the University of Texas. He moved to Houston and began a career as the president of a real estate development company. In 1975, Johnson founded The Johnson Development Corp., which has won awards for its commercial and residential development projects in Houston and Atlanta.
Wyman Meinzer. Benjamin-based Meinzer graduated from Tech in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in wildlife management. He went on to spend five years as a professional predator hunter before becoming a crop adjuster. He returned to Tech to work on a coyote research project in the 1970s before beginning his career as a photographer and writer with work published in top notch publications, including the Smithsonian, Time and Newsweek. He was also named the official photographer of Texas in 1997.
