CASNR distinguished alumni honored; new Young Alumnus Award presented
Texas Tech University's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources will recognize six distinguished alumni at 6 p.m. Monday (Feb. 21) at the university's Merket Alumni Center. The Distinguished Alumnus Awards honor alumni who have made significant contributions to society, and whose accomplishments and careers have brought distinction to the college and to the professions associated with agriculture and natural resources.
In addition, program officials unveiled the creation of a new recognition category, the CASNR Young Alumnus Award. "This will be our first year to present the award," said Jane Piercy, Director of Development and External Relations at Texas Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
The recipient of the 2011 Young Alumnus Award is Lynn Scherler, regional president of CoBank. Scherler of Parker, Col., received his bachelor's degree in agricultural and applied economics from Texas Tech in 1997.
The recipients of this year's distinguished alumnus awards are:" Eddie Smith "" Floydada. Smith received his bachelor's degree in agricultural economics from Texas Tech in 1973. Today, he is a cotton producer and partner with Floyd County Farms." Mark Marley "" Plainview. Marley received his bachelor's degree in agricultural education from Texas Tech in 1984. He is owner and president of Production Plus Seeds, Inc." Stanley Young "" Lubbock. Young received his bachelor's degree in agricultural production from Texas Tech in 1968, and his master's degree in animal breeding from Tech in 1976. Today, he is a retired from the Lubbock County Extension Agent office." Alice McLarty "" McClean, Va. . McLarty received her bachelor's degree in landscape architecture from Texas Tech in 1987. She is a park landscape architect with the National Park Service." Terry McLendon "" Ft. Collins, Col. McLendon received his bachelor's degree in range management from Texas Tech in 1971 and his doctorate in range ecology from Tech in 1979. He is now the principle scientist with KS2 Ecological Field Services." Thomas Holt "" Durham, NC. Holt received his bachelor's degree in zoology from Texas Tech in 1971 and his master's degree in entomology from Tech in 1974. Today, he is director of biology research and development at BASF Agricultural Products.
"The measure of a college's distinction and influence depends greatly upon the achievements of its alumni and the positions they attain in their respective communities and fields of endeavor," Piercy said. "These awards were established to recognize some of our most outstanding alumni."
The awards do more than honor former students, she added. They spotlight the accomplishments of the college, Texas Tech and, ultimately it enhances the pride of alumni, students, faculty and staff.
"It's tangible evidence of the effectiveness of agricultural and natural resource programs at Texas Tech," Piercy said.
