Eldorado barrel racer leads rodeo team to solid showing at Ranger College
Paced by strong riding in barrel racing, a Texas Tech women's rodeo team rider rolled to a first place finish over the weekend at the Ranger College Rodeo. The meeting was the Red Raiders' first Southwest Region National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association event of the spring season.
The three-day event, co-sponsored by Weatherford College, hosted 15 regional schools at the Ranger Events Center. Ranger College has a 50-acre campus inside city limits of Ranger, and is located just north of Interstate 20 between Fort Worth and Abilene.
In barrel racing Kirsten Stubbs, a Tech sophomore agriculture and applied economics major from Eldorado, won the championship, clocking the fastest time of the rodeo at 16.03 to win the first go round of 120 contestants, said Texas Tech Rodeo Coach Chris Guay. Stubbs placed second in the finals and finished first overall, he said.
Meanwhile, team mate Bailey Guthrie, a junior animal sciences major from Rigby, Idaho, placed first in go round one of the goat tying event, sixth in the finals, and second overall.
In the men's competition Luke Creasy, a senior English major from Alberta, Canada, placed fourth in go round one of the bareback bronc riding, second in the finals, and second overall. Creasy's brother Clay tied for third in go round number one in the saddle bronc riding, but the senior equine management major was thrown in the Saturday night finals.
C.J. Kerr, a sophomore animal and food sciences major from Paradise, placed sixth in the steer wrestling in go round one, fourth in the finals, and third overall.
Tech's rodeo teams next travel to Odessa College on March 24-26, followed by Western Texas College on March 31-April 2, Howard College on April 14-16, and a College National Finals Rodeo Barrel Race fund raiser on April 23 at the Texas Tech Equestrian Center. The teams finish their regular season at Tarleton State University on April 28-30 in Stephenville.
