Texas Tech steer wrestlers take spotlight at Odessa College Wrangler Rodeo
Three Texas Tech steer wrestlers pulled down top honors this weekend (March 26) at the annual National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Wrangler Rodeo at Odessa College. The two-day event was the Red Raiders' second Southwest Region National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association outing of the spring season.
C.J. Kerr, a junior animal and food sciences major from Paradise, tied for third in go round one, placed third in the finals and ultimately won the overall steer wrestling championship. The win put Kerr into the 'top five' in the southwest region's steer wrestling standings.
Meanwhile, Jeremy Krywcun, a senior electrical engineering major from Alberta, Canada, threw the fastest time in the steer wrestling competition with a 4.9 second run to win the finals. He tied for sixth place in go round one and finished second overall. Adam Sawyer, a senior agriculture economics major, placed first in go round two of the steer wrestling competition and finished ninth overall.
In other rodeo action:
"Clay Creasy from Alberta, Canada won first in go round one in the saddle bronc riding, while Luke Creasy, a senior English major from Alberta, Canada, placed fourth in go round one and finished
fourth overall in the bareback bronc riding.
"Adam Sawyer of Bassett , Nebraska, and Sterling Smith of Post, placed first in go round one of the team roping, placed seventh in the finals,
and finished seventh overall.
"Bailey Guthrie, an animal science major Rigby, Idaho, maintained a long-standing lead for a College
National Finals Rodeo qualification and moved into the lead in the southwest region's
goat tying standings. The Tech junior tied for third in go round one, placed first
in the finals, and finished second overall.
"In barrel racing, Taylor Langdon, a radiology technology major from Aubrey, nailed down a College National Finals
Rodeo berth by finishing third overall. At the Odessa event she placed second in the
finals, retaining her lead in the southwest region's barrel racing standings. Haley Nelson, a junior business major from Channing, placed third in the finals and finished sixth
overall.
Tech's rodeo teams next travel to Western Texas College on March 31-April 2, followed by Howard College on April 14-16, and a College National Finals Rodeo Barrel Race fund raiser in May at the Texas Tech Equestrian Center. The teams finish their regular season at Tarleton State University on April 28-30 in Stephenville.
