Honors Banquet, 'Boots to Suits' highlight Agriculture Awareness Week
Recognition of an innovative student recruiting effort, a career-oriented 'Boots to Suits' program and a longstanding honors banquet highlight Texas Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Agriculture Awareness Week at the end of the month, officials said today (April 5). Among the many activities on tap are:
Dr. Bill Bennett Student Success Center Reception "" Tuesday (April 26)
CASNR's Alumni & Friends Association will hold a reception establishing the Dr. Bill
Bennett Student Success Center at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the Texas Tech Merket Alumni
Center at 17th and University Ave. in Lubbock. Dr. Bennett was the trailblazer in
raising money for scholarships to increase recruitment of students, said Jane Piercy,
director of CASNR's Development and External Relations. The center has a basic mission
of enrolling a diverse, high-quality student population.
Student Success Center Popcorn Reception "" Tuesday (April 26)
On Tuesday afternoon CASNR's dean's office will host a Student Success Center Popcorn
Reception at 1:30 p.m. in Room 108 of the Goddard Building. The occasion is the college's
official recognition of the name change from the Student Service Center to the Dr.
Bill Bennett Student Success Center. Bennett, a long-time member of the Department
of Plant and Soil Science's emeritus faculty, spearheaded creation of the college's
Ambassadors for Agriculture and Agri-Techsans programs.
Boots to Suits "" Tuesday (April 26)
Later that evening a relative new career-oriented program known as "Boots to Suits"
will be held at 6:30 p.m. in Room 101 of the Animal and Food Sciences Building. Underwritten
by Ag Workers Insurance, the meeting features a catered hamburger dinner followed
by guest speakers Tom Sell of Combest-Sell & Associates, a Lubbock-based lobbying
firm; and Amber Brady, an attorney who often specializes in agricultural issues with
the Lubbock law firm of ZS Brady & Co.
AEC Dessert Reception "" Wednesday (April 27)
The Department of Agricultural Education and Communications will hold a dessert reception
beginning at 7 p.m. at Tech's Frazier Alumni Pavilion. Hosted by the Agricultural
Education and Communications Graduate Organization, the event will recognize student
achievements and honored guests.
CASNR Organization Displays at Croslin Room "" Wednesday (April 27)
CASNR clubs and organizations will be featured in a special display of booths and
informational exhibits from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Croslin Room (lobby and fountain
area) of the main university library. Among those scheduled to appear at the program
are the Agri-Techsans; Tech's Department of Plant and Soil Science; CASNR's chapter
of the American Society of Landscape Architects; and CASNR's chapter of Agricultural
Communicators of Tomorrow.
CASNR Honors Banquet "" Friday (April 29)
Dozens of outstanding students, staff and faculty from across CASNR will be honored
Friday at its annual Honors Banquet at 6:30 p.m. in the Merket Alumni Center. Sponsored
by the Ag Council, the event begins features a variety of honors, including highest
academic achievement, outstanding student awards, "Aggie of the Month" recipients,
new Ag Council leaders, and outstanding professor awards.
Separately, throughout the week three-sided hospitality table tents will appear on luncheon tables in the university's student union building, along with dormitory cafeteria tables across the sprawling campus. In addition, the student success center staff will highlight 'CASNR Trivia' on the college's Facebook page, and an "Agricultural Awareness" display will be featured in the university's Student Union Building.
Finally, an advertisement promoting the importance of agriculture in Texas and Agriculture Awareness Week is set to appear in Tech's student newspaper, the El Toreador. Highlighted under a banner of "Think Outside The Barn," the piece focuses on the importance of Texas being one of the nation's leaders in agriculture, contributing more than $100 billion to the state's economy each year.
