Howard College Rodeo features stout showing by Texas Tech team
Tough barrel racing, goat tying, and bareback bronc riding performances by Texas Tech's rodeo team members led to three first place wins this weekend at the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Howard College Rodeo in Big Spring. The honors also provided entry into the next level of national competition for the teammates.
"Three Tech rodeo raiders sewed up Southwest region championships in each of their respective events," said Chris Guay, Tech's rodeo coach and an instructor with Tech's Department of Animal and Food Sciences. "Bailey Guthrie, Taylor Langdon and Luke Creasy will receive their championship saddles at an awards ceremony April 30 in Stephenville."
Today, Texas Tech's women's rodeo team is second in the region and the men's team is fourth, Guay said. The top two teams and the top three individuals in each event advance to the College National Finals Rodeo. "After the final competition at Tarleton State University, we'll know all advances to CNFR," he said.
Among the Texas Tech standouts at the Southwest Region National Intercollegiate Rodeo
Association event in Big Spring were:
"Barrel Racing "" Taylor Langdon. The radiology technology major from Aubrey finished in first overall. The win secured
her spot to qualify for her first College National Finals Rodeo.
"Goat Tying "" Bailey Guthrie. The junior animal science major from Rigby, Idaho, took first in go round one, first
in finals, and first overall. She is more than 600 points ahead of second place in
the standings.
"Breakaway Calf Roping "" Kirsten Stubbs. The sophomore agriculture and applied economics major from Eldorado placed first
in go round one, third in the finals, and second overall.
"Bareback Bronc Riding "" Luke Creasy. The senior English major from Alberta, Canada, took first place overall, earning
him a trip to CNFR. Earlier this month Creasy made his way into the Professional Rodeo
Cowboys Association world standings after winning the Travis County Livestock Show
and Rodeo in Austin.
Meanwhile, in the tie-down calf roping Craig Leonard, a senior Animal and Food Sciences major from Sonora, placed fifth overall, while Richard George, an agriculture and applied economics major from Dallas, finished sixth overall in the bull riding.
