Leadership Honored; Tech's Faculty Senate pays tribute to CASNR Dean
Texas Tech University's Faculty Senate has unanimously passed a resolution honoring the long service and ongoing leadership of John Burns of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, officials with the university announced today (April 13).
"I've been richly blessed by my work here are Texas Tech, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have worked with so many talented individuals," Burns said following the meeting.
The resolution noted that Burns has served the university in multiple offices since 1969, and that his tenure has been marked by honor, loyalty and dedication to Texas Tech and its teaching and research missions. Burns is scheduled to retire June 30.
The document noted that Burns' ongoing leadership has earned the respect and gratitude of the university faculty, and the faculty senate acknowledges his compassion, contributions and longstanding service.
Burns, himself a former Texas Tech provost came out of retirement in 2007 to serve as interim dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. In 2008, he was named dean of the college. Burns was provost of Texas Tech from 1997-2002, when he returned to classroom teaching and serve as associate vice president for undergraduate research.
A faculty member since 1969, Burns was chairman of Tech's Department of Biological Sciences from 1987 to 1995. He then served as vice provost for academic affairs until his appointment as interim provost in 1996.
Burns has received seven outstanding teaching awards and has led a variety of university committees during his tenure at Texas Tech. In 1988, he was named an Outstanding Centennial Alumnus of the College of Arts and Sciences of New Mexico State University.
The faculty senate, which has more than 40 members from across campus, is an elected assembly of representatives of the tenured and tenure-track faculty members and librarians, authorized by the Tech's Board of Regents in 1977. It serves as an advisory body to the president of the university.
