Tech men's rodeo team takes Western Texas College Rodeo championship
With strong performances in bareback bronc riding and calf roping, Texas Tech's men's rodeo team brought home championship honors March 31-April 2 at the Western Texas College Rodeo in Snyder. The event was the Red Raiders' third Southwest Region National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association outing of the spring season.
In the competition's individual events, bareback bronc rider Luke Creasy, a senior English major from Alberta, Canada, expanded his lead in the regional standings by placing first in go round one, first in the finals, and first overall. In calf roping, Adam Sawyer of Bassett , Nebraska, had the fastest time of the competition at 7.8 seconds in the long go round. He then tied for second in the finals and placed first overall.
In steer wrestling action C.J. Kerr, a junior animal and food sciences major from Paradise, took second in the finals and finished second overall. Jeremy Krywcun, a senior electrical engineering major from Edmonton, placed third in the event's first go round, fifth in the finals and finished fourth overall.
In the women's competition, the team took second place out of 15 schools, said Chris Guay, rodeo team coach and an instructor with Tech's Department of Animal and Food Sciences. The good showing moved the Texas Tech women 140 points ahead of third place Weatherford College, he said.
In breakaway calf roping Kirsten Stubbs, a Tech sophomore agriculture and applied economics major from Eldorado, won top honors. She tied for second in go round one, placed third in the finals, and finished first for the overall championship.
Bailey Guthrie, a junior animal science major from Rigby, Idaho, maintained a long-standing lead for a College National Finals Rodeo qualification and continued her lead in the southwest region's goat tying standings. At this weekend's goat tying event, she placed first in go round one with a blistering 6.8 second run "" the fastest of the week, according to program officials. Guthrie tied for fifth in the finals and finished third overall.
In barrel racing, Taylor Langdon, a radiology technology major from Aubrey, placed fourth in the finals and finished fifth overall. Cecily Crouch, a sophomore animal and food sciences major from Midland, placed fifth in go round one and finished ninth overall.
Tech's rodeo teams next travel to Howard College on April 14-16, followed by Tarleton State University on April 28-30 in Stephenville.
