Akers Named CASNR's Assistant Dean for Academic and Student Programs
Nationally-recognized agricultural communications educator Cindy Akers has been selected as assistant dean for academic and student programs with Texas Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Her new appointment, as well as her promotion to full professor, will take effect Sept. 1.
"We look forward to the bright future that Cindy's leadership will provide to this position," said John Burns, dean of Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
Akers is currently director of the Dr. Bill Bennett Student Success Center and an associate professor with the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications. She will continue to oversee the operations of the student center in her new administrative post.
"One of the most important goals for this position is to preserve and enhance the quality of our academic programs and student performance," Akers said. "This can be accomplished by working with our upper administration, alumni, faculty, staff and students to assess the quality of our teaching and degree programs followed by suggestions for improvement."
Akers joined the Texas Tech faculty in 1997, and has served in several leadership roles from superintendent of the National FFA Agricultural Communications Career Development Event and chair to Tech's Teaching Academy. Founded in 1997, Tech's Teaching Academy has almost 200 members from throughout the university that support, promote and recognize teaching excellence.
Awards for Akers include the Western Region American Association for Agricultural Education Distinguished Teaching Award (2011), Texas Tech's departmental excellence in teaching award (2005), Texas Tech president's excellence in teaching award (2005), Texas Tech Parents Association's Hemphill-Wells New Professor of Excellence in Teaching Award (2004), and the Texas Tech Alumni Association Outstanding New Faculty Award (2004).
A native of Estancia, New Mexico, Akers earned her bachelor's degree in agricultural communications, master's degree in agricultural education and doctorate in curriculum and instruction from Texas Tech University.
