CASNR, NAADA host nat'l agricultural alumni & development conference
More than 130 agricultural alumni and development professionals from across the nation are in the Hub City this week as part of the 36th Annual NAADA Conference. Held June 12-15 at Lubbock's Overton Hotel and Conference Center, the program features educational sessions, speakers and tours of the Texas Tech campus.
Titled "Reach for the Sky," the event is being hosted by Texas Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and the National Agricultural Alumni and Development Association. Key facilitators to the conference's development and organization are Jane Piercy, CASNR's Director of Development and External Relations; Memory Bennett, CASNR's Coordinator of Alumni Relations; Becky Bram, CASNR's Coordinator of College Development; and Senior Business Assistant Tracee Murph.
Sunday's program (June 12) featured a past president's luncheon, as well as strategic planning and education committee meetings. The evening's dinner rolled out with a sweeping photographic overview of Texas, with keynote speaker Wyman Meinzer, the official state photographer of Texas.
Monday's session (June 13) included a publications and projects awards breakfast, followed by presentations on empowering volunteers; web and social media strategies and managing a development staff. The latter program featured Scott Cooksey, Texas Tech's associate vice chancellor for institutional advancement.
The morning program also included a presentation on high school visit programs by CASNR's Coordinator of Student Programs Rachel Bobbitt and CASNR's Coordinator of Student Development Lori Dudley. Other highlights of the day were sessions on trusts; volunteer management; web and social media strategies; major gifts; retaining non-traditional learners.
The Bickford lecture luncheon was led by Drew DeBerry, deputy commissioner of Texas' Department of Agriculture, followed by conference educational tours and an evening "Taste of Texas" chuck wagon dinner.
Tuesday's session (June 14) featured a technology show and tell, along with program on creating award-winning marketing and communications tools; how advancement areas are critical to implementing strategic, college-wide change; and volunteer productivity.
Following a NAADA 2012 University of Kentucky Invitational Lunch, sessions included program on ACTIONS (Alumni Connecting To Involved and Outstanding New Students); and growing grassroots funding. Other sessions were annual funding and major gifts with Scott Self, director of development with Texas Tech's Whitacre College of Engineering Career Services; utilizing technology to enhance career services with Jared Lay, Texas Tech's Assistant Director of University Career Services; and preparing volunteer leadership with Jay Killough, Texas Tech's Director of University Career Services.
The educational session ended with specific tracks on alumni, communications, development, student professional, and volunteers. The day ended with a "Happy Trails Awards Banquet" held at Texas Tech's Merket Alumni Center.
Program officials noted that the NAADA is comprised of 44 of the nation's colleges of agriculture and related sciences as well as individuals who are volunteers not only to NAADA, but also to its member institutions. Officials said the organization is dedicated to the career and professional advancement of the alumni, development, student affairs and volunteer members of its association.
