Pate takes viticulture research poster award at national ASEV conference
Daniel Pate, an outstanding graduate student from Tech's Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics, was presented the top viticulture research poster award on June 23 at the national meeting of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture in Monterey, Calif. The honor included a $1,000 cash award.
Texas Tech officials said that following his graduation earlier this month Pate will be moving to California to take a position with Ernest and Julio Gallo wineries. Pate received his bachelor's (2009) and master's degrees (May, 2011) in agricultural and applied economics from Texas Tech.
His thesis, which was the basis of his award-winning research poster, focused on the "economic evaluation of winegrape contracts, risk sharing, and implications for the future of the industry."
While at Texas Tech, Pate worked in several positions including serving as a research graduate assistant at Lubbock's Texas AgriLife Research & Extension Service Center. His work focused on characterizing current contracting methods including contracting for tonnage, acreage and bottle price, and evaluating the distribution of risk between growers and wineries for each contracting method.
He also worked as a student research assistant with Tech's Department of Plant and Soil Science developing economic decision tools for prospective vineyard growers. In addition, Pate compiled expected costs and returns for establishment and production of wine grapes for four Texas regions.
The American Society for Enology and Viticulture, which formed in 1950, is a professional society dedicated to the interests of enologists, viticulturists, and others in the fields of wine and grape research and production throughout the world. Membership includes professionals from wineries, vineyards, academic institutions and organizations.
