Red Raider Lamb Classic; Wilson's Bland takes top honors at AECGO event
Families from across the South Plains came to Texas Tech's Animal and Food Sciences Livestock Arena to participate in the Red Raider Lamb Classic on Aug. 28. Hosted by the Agricultural Education and Communications Graduate Organization (AECGO), the annual event served as the main fundraiser for the graduate student organization.
"We were very excited about the turnout and how smoothly the show ran," said Corey Duysen, AECGO president and a doctoral student in the agricultural education and communications department. "There were a lot of AECGO members there to help. The show could not have gone that well without their help."
The event featured 49 entries across the four different breeds. Rhaeden Bland of Wilson received both 'Grand Champion' and 'Reserve Grand Champion' honors for two of his medium wool sheep from classes 10 and 11 of the show.
The two judges for the event, Chance Neff of San Angelo and Chelsea Clifton of Kingfisher, Okla., were both recent Texas Tech CASNR alumni and were members of the 2010 Texas Tech Livestock Judging Team. "It was such an honor to be asked to come back and judge the Red Raider Classic," Clifton said.
The purpose of AECGO is to support agricultural education and communications graduate students at research conferences, provide leadership opportunities, and participate in philanthropic projects. AECGO membership is open to all Texas Tech University graduate students with an interest in agricultural education and communications.
