Texas Tech's historic dairy barn new home for CASNR Homecoming Breakfast
College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources alumni will get a warm welcome Oct. 15 as the graduates, young and old, celebrate the annual Homecoming Breakfast festivities adjacent to Texas Tech's historic Dairy Barn near the intersection of 15th Street and Detroit Avenue.
"We're excited about the new location for our Homecoming Breakfast," said Jane Piercy, CASNR's Director of Development and External Relations. "We hope everyone enjoys the food and fun as they renew old acquaintances and make new ones."
Teeming with history and dearly remembered by Texas Tech's first students, the Dairy Barn and its nearby grain silo, stand as a monument to what was then known as Texas Technological College's early aspirations of becoming a premiere institution. The state-of-the-art barn was designed by Fort Worth architect W. C. Hedrick with the help of agricultural dean A. H. Leidigh and professor W. L. Stangel. Construction began in 1926.
The breakfast, which gets underway at 8 a.m., will be held in a large, specially-constructed tent adjacent to the dairy barn facility. To offset the cost of the event, CASNR officials are encouraging a $10 donation. Texas Tech officials note that parking will be different this year. The plan is to park in lots R-3 just south of the Dairy Barn and R-5 located west of Goddard Hall.
Immediately following breakfast, other activities include:
"Department of Agricultural & Applied Economics. Open house in the Agricultural Sciences Building, Room 319.
"Meat Science Program. Tailgating luncheon at noon on the south side of the livestock arena in the parking
lot. The exact time is pending on the football game schedule. All animal and food
science alumni and students are welcome.
"Homecoming Football Game. Later in the day Texas Tech will face Kansas State University for the homecoming
game. Officials suggest checking the game time at www.texastech.com or call (806)
742-4412.
CASNR officials note that there will be several activities on tap the day before the breakfast. On Friday (Oct. 14) the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications Alumni Association will host an inaugural Homecoming Party from 6-9 p.m. at the home of Dan Taylor.
Taylor's residence is located northwest of the intersection of Farm-to-Market roads 41 and 179, southwest of Lubbock. There will be a brief alumni meeting at 7:30 p.m. A chuck wagon dinner will be served, and there is no cost to attend. RSVP to (806) 742-2816 or email at steven.fraze@ttu.edu.
In addition, on Friday (Oct. 14) the Department of Landscape Architecture will have an alumni-student workshop for departmental alumni and current students in the Pavilion.
