Positive Signs; CASNR once again sets fall enrollment and research record
Texas Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources reached a new benchmark in student enrollment with a record number of students signed up for classes in the fall semester, university officials report. Final enrollment for the college stood at 1,874 up 5 percent.
Another upbeat signal comes in the form of rising revenues for research. Research revenue per tenure/tenure-track faculty member is at $183,000, plus CASNR now leverages $1 of state line-item funds for over $5.6 of sponsored funds. "This is a very positive sign," said Michael Galyean, Interim Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. "We're moving in the direction we need to go."
The enrollment numbers for individual departments were:" Department of Agricultural & Applied Economics: 368 (Grad: 48 /Undergrad: 320)" Department of Agricultural Education & Communications: 321 (Grad: 69 /Undergrad: 252)" Animal & Food Sciences: 502 (Grad: 76 /Undergrad: 426)" Department of Landscape Architecture: 129 (Grad: 10 /Undergrad: 119)" Natural Resources Management: 305 (Grad: 53 /Undergrad: 252)" Department of Plant & Soil Science: 236 (Grad: 102 /Undergrad: 134)" Agricultural Undecided: 13 (Grad: 7 /Undergrad: 6)
Historically, CASNR had one of its largest enrollments in the Fall of 1977 when 1,687 students were enrolled in the college, according to Ramona Johnson, CASNR's Coordinator of Undergraduate Programs.
CASNR's undergraduate enrollment this fall was up 4.8 percent at 1,509. The graduate enrollment this fall was up 5 percent at 365. The graduate enrollment is another record breaker for the college.
A number that CASNR officials are particularly proud is the rise in doctoral students across the college. The total number of CASNR doctoral students this fall was 144, a 34 percent rise from just three years ago when the count was 107. Individually, the doctoral tally was Department of Agricultural & Applied Economics: 24; Department of Agricultural Education & Communications: 30; Animal & Food Sciences: 39; Natural Resources Management: 17; and Department of Plant & Soil Science: 34.
Separately, CASNR officials note that its research program remains nationally recognized for excellence in the delivery of knowledge on current and emerging aspects of the food, fiber, fuel, natural resources, environmental sciences, management, and planning disciplines.
Among the college's major research thrusts are sustainable agricultural production and management systems; food safety, security, and quality; biotechnology and precision agriculture; processing and value-added products; natural resource management and planning; agricultural marketing, trade and policy analysis; human and social capital; and technology transfer.
Meanwhile, Texas Tech as a whole established record enrollment figures for the third-straight fall semester as 32,327 students are on campus for classes. The number passes the previous mark of 31,637 from fall 2010.
Both undergraduate and graduate enrollment increased this fall. Undergraduate enrollment set a record with 26,063 students, while graduate school enrollment is at an all-time high with 5,566 students. The law school has 698 students enrolled, the highest number since 2006.
