Meat Judging Team aces Nebraska's American Royal Meat Judging Contest
Texas Tech's Meat Judging Team continued its winning streak with a first-place finish on Sunday (Oct. 16) at the American Royal Meat Judging Contest in Omaha, Neb. The team posted a 21-point victory over their nearest competitor, Colorado State. Oklahoma State, South Dakota State and the University of Illinois rounded out the top five teams at the competition.
"The team won this contest with their consistency," said Mark Miller, team coach and Tech's San Antonio Livestock Show Distinguished Chair in Meat Science. "I'm proud of the focus the team members are displaying at each contest."
Texas Tech placed first in beef judging and overall beef, and finished second in beef grading and reasons. Individually, Jerra McMath, a senior from Estancia, NM, was second overall. Dakotah Williams, a junior from Glenrose, and Drew Cashman, a junior from New Windsor, MD, finished fourth and sixth overall.

"Amanda White, senior from Garden City, Kan.
The team had eight of the 'Top 10' individuals in the alternate division. White, True, Smith, Russell, Nordman, Laurent, Helms and Jurek finished second through ninth, respectively. Tech's meat judging team is coached by Miller and Shanna Ward, a meat science graduate student. The team will compete in two more contests this fall.
