Smith selects CASNR Assistant Dean Cindy Akers for integrated scholar honor
CASNR's Assistant Dean for Academic and Student Programs has been named a 2011 Texas Tech Integrated Scholar by the university's Office of the Provost. Cindy Akers, who also serves as a professor in agricultural communications, was recognized for her outstanding research, teaching and service through the annual selection process.
Akers is the third CASNR faculty member to be named to the integrated scholar program in the past three years. Previously, Mindy Brashears, director of Texas Tech's International Center for Food Industry Excellence, and Vivien Allen, a Paul Whitfield Horn Professor and Tech's Thornton Distinguished Professor of Forages, were also selected as Texas Tech Integrated Scholars.
Texas Tech Provost Bob Smith noted that faculty named to the integrated scholar program are a model of what all faculty of the university should strive to achieve. "These faculty members bring the elements of teaching, research and service together synergistically for the benefit of our students and society," he said.
The model for the integrated scholar program was brought by Smith from his time at the University of Arkansas. Since the program was started at Texas Tech three years ago, 36 faculty members have been recognized. Typically, names are sent from individual deans of each college, and then reviewed by the provost's office.
In addition to her agricultural communications teaching duties, Akers oversees CASNR's Dr. Bill Bennett Student Success Center, a team of professionals that deals with student organizations, internship opportunities, college events, university resources, and career development for students majoring in agriculture.
Akers' research focuses on effective communication with the general public and agricultural producers, as well as agricultural recruitment, retention and career placement. She's a member of the American Association for Agricultural Education and the Association for Communication Excellence.
