Spiess, Hunger selected as TSSRM outstanding range management students
A sophomore and junior from Texas Tech's Department of Natural Resources Management were recognized as 'outstanding range management students' Thursday (Oct. 13) at the annual meeting of the Texas Section of the Society for Range Management at San Angelo's McNease Convention Center. Tech's Jonathan Spiess and Kaitlin Hunger were nominated by the faculty members from their department.
Spiess, who is from the small community of Industry (80 miles west of Houston), is majoring in range management. He said he selected a range management career path because of his background in habitat evaluation while in FFA, along with his personal experience in cattle grazing and participation in plant identification competitions. He plans on obtaining a range science master's degree after graduation and eventually working professionally as a range or habitat specialist.
Meanwhile, Hunger is a junior in Texas Tech's Honors College. The San Angelo native comes from a family with four generations of ranching experience, which is one of the prime drivers in her range management career selection. Hunger noted that she has, "always been taught the importance of ranching and the need to sustain rangelands for future generations."
According to the Society for Range Management, the group is a professional scientific society and conservation organization whose members are concerned with studying, conserving, managing and sustaining the varied resources of the rangelands which comprise nearly half the land in the world. Established in 1948, it claims to have more than 4,000 members in 48 countries, including many developing nations. Members include land managers, scientists, educators, students, producers and conservationists.
