Texas Tech rodeo teams wrap up fall season with flair at equestrian center
Texas Tech's rodeo teams ended their fall season with a strong finish this weekend at the Texas Tech Rodeo in Lubbock. Held at the university's equestrian center indoor arena, the meeting was the Red Raiders fifth Southwest Region National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association event of the season.
In competition action, the women's rodeo team held its first place position among the 15 schools within the southwest region. During the Hub City event Bailey Guthrie, a senior exercise and sports sciences major from Rigby, Idaho maintained her lead in the regional standings by placing second in go round one, seventh in the finals and sixth overall in the goat tying event.
"Haley Nelson and Taylor Langdon are in the top of the regional barrel racing standings, as well," added Chris Guay, Texas Tech's rodeo coach.
In the men's competition, Tech's Josh Carden, a junior agriculture and applied economics major from Elberta, Ala., placed fourth in the bull riding in go round one and finished fourth overall. Teammate C.J. Kerr, a junior animal and food sciences major from Paradise, tied for fifth in go round one, placed third in the finals and third overall in steer wrestling.
Texas Tech's rodeo teams are scheduled to compete in several more rodeos during the spring semester. Their goal is to win a regional championship which will qualify them for the College National Finals Rodeo next summer. The top two teams and top three individuals in the region automatically advance to nationals in Casper, Wyoming.
