Texas Tech women's rodeo team unstoppable, scores back-to-back wins
The women's rodeo team at Texas Tech continued its winning streak Sunday (Oct. 1) by taking top honors at Sul Ross State University's National Intercollegiate Rodeo in Alpine. The team victory comes on the heels of an equally strong performance at last weekend's Eastern New Mexico University Rodeo in Portales, NM.
During the Sul Ross competition, Tech's Haley Nelson, a senior English major from Channing, finished second overall among 130 barrel racers, while Bailey Guthrie, a senior occupational therapy major from Rigby, Idaho, finished second overall in the goat-tying event.
Sophomore agricultural and applied economics major and El Dorado native Kirsten Stubbs placed third in the first go round of breakaway calf roping, and freshman Kara Kohutek, an animal science major from Midland, placed seventh in the first go round.
The men's rodeo team also competed in Alpine, and freshman animal and food sciences major Treyson Antonick of Athens finished fourth overall in the event. Teammate Richard George, a mechanical engineering graduate student, earned a spot in the top 10 finals.
Both Texas Tech rodeo teams will host more than 500 contestants at the 62nd annual Texas Tech National Intercollegiate Rodeo Oct. 20-22 at Texas Tech's Equestrian Center. Participants will compete in events including calf roping, goat tying, steer wrestling and bull riding. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or at Dollar Western Wear and Gebo's.
