CASNR alum Mike Gilbert receives Texas Tech Distinguished Alumni Award
The Texas Tech Alumni Association will honor College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources alumnus Mike Gilbert with a Distinguished Alumni Award during a Nov. 11 reception at the Merket-McKenzie Alumni Center. Gilbert is currently president of Bayer Cotton Seed International and Global Head of Plant Breeding and Trait Development.
According to university officials, the dinner and awards' presentations are designed to recognize and honor alumni who have made significant contributions toward furthering the excellence of Texas Tech through outstanding accomplishments, careers and/or through extraordinary measures of service.
"It's a tremendous honor to be selected as a distinguished alumnus of Texas Tech University," Gilbert said. "Many people have positively impacted my life and for these, I am indebted. I have such great family, friends and coworkers who really have been important to me over the years, plus, of course, the great professors and administration at Texas Tech. All of these people share in this award."
In the past Gilbert has served on Tech's plant and soil science department advisory board, as well as the CASNR dean's advisory council. In addition, he's been instrumental in providing scholarships and research dollars for graduate students, along with helping the students find employment after graduation.
Awards for Gilbert include CASNR Distinguished Alumnus (2004); and Texas Tech Outstanding Agriculturalist (2005). He received his bachelor's degree in agricultural economics from Texas Tech (1980), and a master's degree from West Texas A&M. He returned to Texas Tech for his doctorate in agronomy (1989).
Alumni are nominated by members and friends of the Alumni Association, as well as current Texas Tech faculty and staff. Names of nominees are then submitted to a selection committee, who make the final selection of award recipients.
