Weinheimer tapped for research assistant professor, water center leadership
Justin Weinheimer, a skilled research economist with Texas Tech's Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics, has been named a research assistant professor and assistant director of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources' Water Center, officials with the university report. He officially stepped into his new posts on Nov. 1.
"Understanding the many linkages within production agriculture is crucial to its sustainability and economic viability" Weinheimer said. "Irrigated agriculture is a major contributor to the production systems and resulting economic activity within the Texas High Plains."
The Fredericksburg native indicated that he's particularly interested in continuing his research efforts in evaluating the sustainability concerns of irrigated agriculture, farm management tools and techniques, and policy aspects of Texas water resources. In the past his research has focused on evaluating the economic impacts of the declining Ogallala aquifer and how changes in irrigation practices, techniques, and management impact farm productivity.
One of his goals as assistant director of the water center is to facilitate multidisciplinary and collaborative research initiatives which provide a greater understanding of the long term implications of water management, conservation, and irrigation technology within the agricultural industry.
CASNR's water center was established to coordinate and foster research and outreach activities related to water resources within the college. In addition it coordinates with other units, both on campus and off campus, with related interests.
The center functions in collaboration with the six academic departments within CASNR, including agricultural and applied economics; agricultural education and communications; animal and food sciences; landscape architecture; natural resources management; and plant and soil science.
Prior to joining the Texas Tech faculty, Weinheimer served as a post-doctoral research associate in Tech's Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas Tech. His doctorate in agricultural and applied economics is from Texas Tech.
