AFS's Gragg, Chaney win top food and environmental safety awards in Chicago
Sara Gragg and Evan Chaney, doctoral students from Tech's Department of Animal and Food Sciences, were presented the top two Food and Environmental Safety awards for outstanding research presentation at the annual meeting of the Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases held in Chicago, Dec. 4-6.
"These two wins resulted in a clean sweep for Texas Tech University," said Texas Tech Food Safety and Public Health Professor Guy Loneragan. "This conference was a great opportunity for these two students to disseminate the results of important research conducted at Texas Tech University."
Gragg won first place with her presentation titled "Salmonella in lymph nodes of cattle presented for harvest." She discovered that lymph nodes from feedlot cattle might serve as an entry point for potential food contamination. Her research suggested that there should be investigation into this area to reduce the risk of Salmonella in lymph nodes of healthy cattle.
Taking second place, Chaney's presentation discussed comparisons of various technologies to decrease instances of E. coli in cattle feces. In his project, titled "Development of a semi-quantitative ranking scheme to estimate the concentration of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in bovine feces," In his work, Chaney developed a quick, repeatable and inexpensive method to estimate the concentration of bacteria in a sample of feces.
The Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases was established in 1920 to discuss and disseminate research advances in animal diseases. At its annual meeting, international research scientists, graduate students, and industry and academic professionals present and discuss advances in the global livestock and companion animal industries.
