Can Do; Texas Tech Ag Council aids South Plains Food Bank holiday effort
Texas Tech's Ag Council is doing its part to help provide canned goods to the South Plains Food Bank during this holiday season. On Wednesday (Dec. 7) more than 3,954 pounds of food were collected by members of the organization at their monthly meeting in the Animal and Food Sciences Building.
Ag Council president Trevor White said the college-wide community service effort was paced by the Block and Bridle Club with 2,184 pounds, followed by the Meat Science Association at 987 pounds and Ag Communicators of Tomorrow with 782 pounds. "The total was almost double what we had last year," he said.
The senior agricultural and applied economics major explained that he encouraged the college's clubs to get involved, whether they contributed 10 pounds or 1,000 pounds. "Every pound counts," White said, "and the South Plains Food Bank is in need of all the help they can get to provide meals to families in these tough economic times."
Contributing teams receive points toward the organization's "Club of the Semester" award, but White said that there are even greater personal rewards. "What I think is more important is that all the organizations that contribute receive the gratitude of a thankful community and the knowledge that something they did will help out numerous people on the South Plains," he said.
Though Ag Council focuses on donations from CASNR clubs and organizations, the food drive is actually part of a campus-wide effort called the Tech Can Share Food Drive. Berry Massey, volunteer coordinator for the South Plains Food Bank, said the food bank's goal is to obtain 500,000 pounds of donated canned foods and $150,000 of cash donations for the U Can Share Food Drive.
Donated canned foods are taken to the South Plains Food Bank and then distributed to clients, who are screened by 220 agencies and given vouchers if they qualify as being in need. Students can still donate canned foods to any of the entry stations around campus, which include the Robert H. Ewalt Student Recreation Center and the Student Union Building.
Ag Council members include the Ag Communicators of Tomorrow; Agronomy Club; Alpha Gamma Rho; American Society of Landscape Architecture; Beef Cattle Show Team; Block and Bridle; Collegiate FFA; Collegiate 4-H; and Collegiate Horseman Association. Other members are the Entomology Club; Equestrian Team; Farm House Fraternity; Food Technology; Freshman Ag Council; Horticulture Society; Meat Sciences Association; Pre-Vet Society; Range, Wildlife and Fisheries Club; Rodeo Association; and the Sigma Alpha Sorority.
